Ceramic Coatings: Ceramic coatings, on the other hand, are liquid polymer products that chemically bond with the vehicle’s clear coat. Ceramic coatings do not offer the same level of physical impact protection as PPF.

What Are Iron Deposits?

Iron deposits can be called industrial fall out, rail dust, or even brake dust. This type of contamination occurs from small metal particles landing on your paint, causing what looks like small rust specs. Generally iron deposits come from transportation on a rail car during delivery and from your brake pads or other brake pads from neighboring vehicles on the road. These specs are much easier to see on light colored paintwork, however, it can happen on dark colored paint as well.

How To Remove Iron Deposits?

First, make sure you thoroughly wash your paint, removing any loose dirt and grime. It is best to do this in a shaded area to help prevent water marks as you will need to keep the vehicle wet during this process.

With the vehicle still wet, reach for a dedicated iron remover. We carry many here at Majestic Car Care and some of our favorites are the Gtechniq W6 Iron and General Fallout Remover, CarPro Iron X Iron Remover, and the Gyeon Iron. These high quality formulas interact with the contaminants embedded in your clearcoat, dissolving and loosening them. To apply, simply spray onto the surface, let dwell, and rinse clean. Please note that most of these iron removers STINK. While manufacturers have made strides to better the smell, sulfur or rotten eggs can still be pretty pronounced, so keep that in mind when using these products. After spraying onto the surface, most formulas will go on clear, but will turn to a dark purple color once they start to interact with the deposits. Do not let the product dry on the surface and thoroughly wash and rinse away once the dwell time is up. You can apply these cleaners to your paint, wheels and trim pieces and the process above generally removes most of the deposits. However, if you have any deeply embedded deposits agitating with a wheel or paint brush, along with a wash mitt will help.

While the process above should remove most, if not all, of the iron deposits, some may remain. If you have this issue, you can use a clay bar to help pull the loosened iron deposits from the surface. I personally love the Clay Magic Fine Grade Clay Bar and the Nanoskin Glide as the clay lube to reduce friction between the clay bar and the clearcoat. Start by spraying glide onto the surface and then gently rub the clay bar back and forth. Clay one panel at a time, spraying lubricant as you go. During this process, you will feel the clay bar grab or stick in places, but once you make a couple passes it will glide smoothly. This is how you know the contaminants are being removed and you can always double check the area as you will notice the rust color marks removed from the surface as well.

What To Do After Removing Iron Deposits?

Nothing! Well, that is not completely true. During the process listed above, you have essentially thoroughly washed, decontaminated, and dried your vehicle. This leaves you with an incredibly clean surface ready for you to polish away imperfections, or simply apply your favorite wax, sealant, or coating. Or maybe even both, the rest is up to you!

WHAT IS PAINT CORRECTION & DO YOU NEED IT?

With the large number of car detailing and paint protection services today, getting your vehicle to shine has never been easier. An hour at a car detailing shop can turn your vehicle into gleaming condition. But within the influx of techniques out there, there’s also the art of paint correction.

So, what is paint correction, and do you need it? Find out below:

DOES PAINT CORRECTION REMOVE SCRATCHES?

Yes, it does. Paint correction is a exterior detailing method that can remove most or all of the scratches on your vehicle’s body paint. This method works by smoothing out your car’s body paint layer. This is the layer of paint on top of your car’s body panels. It is the layer that gets scratched out with all the imperfections.

All the scratches will be reduced once the auto detailer levels them out. Now, depending on how bad the scratches are, this will reduce the thickness of the body paint layer. The result is that you lose up to 85% of your vehicles scratches, holograms, spots and minor oxidations.

This can make it shine like no other.

IS POLISHING AND PAINT CORRECTION THE SAME?

No, these are two different processes with the same goal. Polishing is when abrasive chemicals are used to level out smaller scratches and contaminations on your paint job. Paint correction on the other hand is a strenuous one-off treatment that results in your vehicle’s clear coat becoming thinner.

Polishing is also done along with two different processes: buffing and waxing. After buffing, the car is polished, and then waxed for sealing the paint. This can be a simple procedure done after your regular car wash and it isn’t a luxury like correcting paint.

Paint correction is a lengthy procedure that requires your car to be completely decontaminated, then polished, and freed of any sealants. After this, it is thoroughly checked for the damages on the paintwork. Different scratches will require their own levels of attention and solutions.

STAGES OF PAINT CORRECTION

There are many different car paint correction treatments available on the market today. These options may be done in one, two, or three stages, with a one-stage correction being the most basic. Deciding which stage will offer the appropriate correction for your vehicle will depend on your paint type and condition.

Stage-One

Stage 1 car paint detailing refers to the process of polishing the paint on your vehicle in a single step. Technicians only use one buffing agent and one pad. This stage is considered to be a refining process that only eliminates the most minor imperfections. Stage 1 paint correction is done with a minimally abrasive finishing pad that will not remove swirl marks.

Stage-Two

The Stage 2 treatment is a good intermediate option. It is suitable for use on vehicles that have minor scratches and moderate swirl marks. The treatment is known as a two-stage process because two different pads and polishes are utilized. The first stage uses a more abrasive pad and a cutting polish that removes the imperfections.

After the cutting stage is complete, a smoother polishing pad and finishing polish will be applied to your vehicle. The finishing stage serves to remove holograms and marring that remained after the cutting stage. Like Stage 1, Stage 2 concludes with a wax sealant to protect your newly refinished paint job.

Stage-Three

The most advanced car scratch repair option is a Stage 3 paint correction. The second and third stages of this treatment are the same as those found in a Stage 2 paint correction treatment. However, a heavy cutting agent and a courser pad are used first. These tools are more abrasive than the standard cutting agent and are designed to remove deep scratches and marring.

If necessary, three-stage auto paint correction can also include spot wet sanding at the site of deep scratches. If sanding is required, it will be done before any of the polishing stages. After all of the stages are completed, a sealant will be applied to protect the paint.

IS A PAINT CORRECTION WORTH IT?

Paint correction does have several advantages. The first one is obviously that it will make your car look great. Darker coloured vehicles will look and shine even better after a paint correction. Other than that, it greatly maintains your car’s resale value.

However, it is important to know that a great paint correction job can be pricey. This is simply due to the long hours (or days) that one can take. You’ll also have to take good care of the car to maintain it. Sometimes, a paintjob may be so neglected and ruined that only a repaint can get the job done.

So, if you don’t see your vehicle more than a tool to take you from A to B, or are on a strict budget, it’s better to go for another detailing method. Otherwise, you should know that a paint correction job will be completely worth the time when your car is transformed into a thing of beauty.

HOW MUCH DOES PAINT CORRECTION COST?

Steps to Spring Cleaning Your Car

ENGINE BAY

It’s a stage that many forget or simply choose to ignore, which is something of a shame because transforming your engine bay, especially on a relatively modern car, couldn’t be simpler if done right. Over winter you’ll find significantly more salt and road grime being flung up into engine bays, along with other organic debris like dead leaves, mud and mulch finding its way through scuttle panels, in some cases even blocking the factory drain holes. Cleaning this away is not only a matter of aesthetics, it can actually prolong the life of vital components… basically stopping contaminants from rotting some of the more sensitive parts of your engine bay.

On a cool engine give the whole engine bay a pre-rinse, This is safe as long as you avoid spraying directly at alternators and exposed electrics. After your pre-rinse, use a APC (all purpose cleaner ) we recommend Gtechniq W5 APC, can be applied and brushed into surfaces with a Detailing Brush. You can keep applying your cleaning product as you work, just don’t let it fully dry. Once you’ve brushed your cleaner into all areas, simply rinse away the dirt with your pressure washer or a garden hose.

Pre-Wash And Contact Wash

Proper hand car wash is a great way to bring your vehicle back to its glory. We recommend a three buckets method, You have a wash bucket filled with your favorite car shampoo, a rinse bucket with clean water, and a third bucket dedicated for your wheels, tires and other grimy parts of your car.

Start with a thorough pre-wash, it is the only way to remove heavy soiling without inflicting swirl marks. Start rinsing down the vehicle from the top to bottom to remove any loose, heavy soiling. Don’t forget door jambs, trunk jamb, wheels and wheel arches.

After you have completed your pre-wash, Wash your wheels and tires first. Start by rinsing your wheels and tires with water and then spray them down with your favorite wheel cleaner. Let the wheel cleaner sit as directed and then begin agitating with a wheel brush, detail brush, and wheel woolie. Once your wheels have been scrubbed clean you will want to rinse them with clean water. Your tires can be cleaned the same way by using your favorite cleaner. You will want to scrub your tires until there is no brown foam remaining on the tire.

Now comes the fun part, use a foam cannon to spray shampoo on the vehicle, This allows the soap to begin breaking down dirt and lifting it off of the paint Once the foam has dwelled on the paint for a few minutes rinse it off and then do a contact wash with our dedicated wash buckets starting with the roof and upper sides, and finishing with the lower sides and rear end. This will avoid any transfer of grime to cleaner areas. Make sure to rinse your wash mitt in the rinse bucket after washing each panel.

Paint Decontamination And Protection

After drying the car with high quality drying towel, its time to decontaminate the paint. This is where we remove embedded contaminants that could have built up over the winter season. Here we tackle the sort of nasties that can’t be eradicated by washing alone.

you can use a Clay Bar, along with Clay Lube. It’s a really simple process that makes a huge amount of difference, some even say this is where a “wash’ meets a “detail’! In any case, it’s as simple as lubricating the clay and the surface with clay lube, and then gently running the clay back and forth until the contaminants have been removed and wipe off the panel with high quality microfiber – you can actually feel the difference in how your clay glides when the surface is smooth.

Now, it is a good time to protect your vehicle’s finish with some form of protection. There are endless options to choose from and we feel you should at the very least use a paint sealant on the vehicle’s finish. Many spray sealants can last as long as 6 months and are extremely easy to use. It will last till you need another coat for the following winter. If you have a ceramic coating on your car this will help protect your investment as a sacrificial layer on your paint that will help maintain your coating.

Interior Cleaning

Now is a great time to start tackling the interior, Vacuum the seats and carpets first, to remove the worst of the loose grime and then you can start scrubbing your dashboard and cleaning the entire interior including the center console, door panels, door handles, and seat belt plastics and buttons using your APC, a soft detailing brush and a clean microfiber. Do not use anything on your vehicle’s video screens that could damage it. Always read the labels and directions on the products you are using to make sure nothing will harm your screens or plastics. You can also use your APC over fabrics, agitating the stains and grime away with an Upholstery Brush. Grab your best automotive glass cleaner and waffle weave towels and clean the glass of your windows, sunroof, and interior mirrors. A final wipe over and your cabin will be as fresh as the day it left the factory.

One last interior product to consider is GTECHNIQ I2 TRI-CLEAN, which has been developed to kill 99.99% of all bacteria and viruses. A simple spray and wipe application is the key here, and as well as being devastatingly effective on areas like steering wheels and shifters that suffer from the most human contact, it’s also great for spraying into heater vents. It may sound strange, but this is an important tip because air conditioning systems are notorious for bacteria build-up when they’re unused over winter. And, what’s the first thing you do as soon as the weather heats up? That’s right, blow the whole lot in your face! Spraying Wipe Out into the vents eliminates the problem, making this product a must have, especially in the current climate.

The idea is to shield the paint from damage that may come from stones, bird droppings, chemicals and even fading. However, it won’t protect from bigger dents and scrapes. Not all car paint protection is created the same, and there are several different types on the market, which is why it is important to do your research.

Different types of paint protection

The two most popular and highly effective types of paint protection are paint protection film and ceramic coating paint protection. While is newer to the market, both types have different strengths when it comes to usage.

Paint protection film – also referred to as clear bra or PPF, the paint protection film is a clear urethane film that is either applied to high-impact areas of your car, such as the front bumper, the hood, rocker panels, headlights and mirrors or to the whole car. The idea is to avoid any risk of stone chips and other objects damaging the paintwork. Brands such as the brand we use, XPEL offer ‘self-healing’ capabilities, which means light scratches will form back to clear and protect the paint beneath it.

Ceramic coating paint protection – also referred to as nano-coatings, ceramic coating and graphene coating paint protection requires more preparation than traditional waxes or sealants. A thin layer is applied to the car, which forms a chemical bond that can only be removed through abrasion. The ceramic coatings are resistant to UV rays and chemicals. We highly recommend professional grade nano-coatings such as Ceramic Pro or Revivify Self Healing Coatings. These coatings should be installed by a certified professional and are usually backed with a warranty for your peace of mind.

Wax – Wax helps protect car paint against dirt and grime. A coat of wax typically delivers results that last up to four months, and results vary based on the amount of time a car is exposed to the elements, how frequently the vehicle is washed, and the type of wax used. Unfortunately, wax does not offer car paint protection coating against chemicals, scratches, and scuff marks. Wax can also be easily removed with a detergent.

Sealant – A sealant is a synthetic product that simultaneously protects car paint and improves its gloss. It bonds to a paint surface and provides results that generally last anywhere from three to six months.
A sealant’s effectiveness depends on how often a car is washed, the chemicals used in the product, and other factors. A sealant can be beneficial for car owners who want to protect their vehicle’s paint against sap, chemicals, and the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. Like wax, a sealant can be removed with a detergent.

Do I really need paint protection on my new car?

Firstly it should be understood that no car NEEDS paint protection if the owner is not looking to keep it in perfect condition or looking to help it retain its value. For those of us who really like taking care of their cars Many car paint protection options are available, and each has its pros and cons. When considering whether paint protection is right for you, it’s important to look at how you use your car:

• Are you driving it every day?
• Do you have a long daily commute or enjoy taking weekend road trips?
• Do you keep your car in a garage when you are not driving it?
• Will it be parked under trees?
• How often does your car get polished?

Once you’ve purchased your new car and got it home, we recommend a thorough clean and decontamination, dependent on whether your car requires paint correction due to swirl marks, scratches or other imperfections, this should be immediately followed by applying paint protection to your new vehicle with a wax, sealant or ceramic coating. Also, If you were recently involved in a car accident, it is a good time to invest in paint protection, too. The protection for your car’s new paint can only benefit it moving forward.

Is car dealership paint protection worth it?

Well car dealers sell cars. Not many are skilled or trained in the art of car detailing and neither are their Lot staff members or those tasked with preparing a car for both pre-sale or post sale. What this really means is it is hard to trust a dealership to provide the level of care and attention needed in car detailing when preparing your paint protection on your new car. If you ask your salesperson who is going to apply the paint protection treatment, they will let you know about their trained professionals. If that statement makes you slightly nervous, feel free to ask to see the accreditations for the paint protection services. You can even ask to speak to the professional(s) themselves. Stand your ground here as you are not being a pain; you are just being a concerned owner.

Blogs and comment sections are full of complaints and advice about avoiding dealership add ons at all costs, but this does not need to be the case. If the offer is a sweetener in your purchase deal, then simply inquire about 3rd party detailers and whether those who carry out the paint protection service are fully qualified. I for one would be very tempted by the offer of a 3rd party professional detailer getting his hands on my car and I would likely recommend the car dealership service to others knowing they had taken the time to make such an agreement with other local car detailing and paint protection service providers.

When it snows and you need to drive, most of us simply think about removing the snow so you can hop back in your vehicle and kick on the heat.  We usually don’t think about whether or not we’re causing any damage to the exterior of the vehicle when removing snow.

When the snows come down really hard, a lot of people make the mistake of trying to remove the accumulated snow from their vehicle with a shovel, broom or other abrasive tool. Consider using specialty products like a ‘Snow Broom‘ with soft, foam edges.

Dealing with Ice

Ice can be difficult to remove; however, do not be tempted to use the ice scraper that you use on your windows.
